Solos en América was considered a watershed album containing cuts that would become classics of Rock en Español from that time, including the homonymous track, "Cuando Seas Grande", and "Mi Sombra en la Pared". With a much more polished sound, and greater pop accessibility than the ZAS works, Mateos jumped on the crest of the wave of Argentine rock acts that dominated the 1986–1988 period all over Latin America, Spain, and elsewhere. In 1986, Mateos recorded in the United States his first solo album (officially, but in practice he still used members of ZAS as supporting band). He turned ZAS into one of the most important Argentine rock bands of the early 80s. The following year he managed to contact Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and gain a spot on stage as the opening act for the British group for their Buenos Aires concerts. In 1979, he and his brother Alejandro formed the underground rock band ZAS. He became involved in music since he was 15 years of age. In 1998, keyboardist Mario Maselli and bassist Ariel Pozzo joined the new band's lineup, recording Bar Imperio.Miguel Mateos/Zas in 1982: Miguel Mateos, Fernando Lupano, Ricardo Pegnotti and Alejandro Mateos. During the 1990s, Miguel Mateos made the decision to settle in Miami, where the artist made four solo records.

The following year, the group played in the U.S., this time with guitarist Carlos García and bass player Cachorro López the result was Solos en America, a Latin rock masterpiece. The success of that record allowed Miguel Mateos to perform four acclaimed shows at Buenos Aires' Luna Park, one of the most important local venues. After issuing Tengo Que Parar in 1984, Miguel Mateos y Zas hit local charts with a song called "Tira Para Arriba." Soon after, a live recording was made at Buenos Aires' Coliseo Theater, later released as Rockas Vivas. By that time, bassist Raúl Chevalier and guitarist Eduardo Sanz joined the band. A self-titled debut album was released in 1982, followed by Huevos in 1983. The group appeared live as opening act for British rock legends Queen in February of 1981. Along with his brother Alejandro Mateos and musician Jorge Infusino, the talented artist formed a band called Zas in 1979. Argentinean singer/songwriter Miguel Mateos became involved in the local music scene as leader of the band Cristal.
